Key West Restaurants:

A cheeseburger in paradise or water front fine dining?

Many Key West restaurants like B.O's Fish Wagon, pictured below, are considered tourist attractions. Whether you are hungry for a cheeseburger in paradise or some excellent sea food near a marina, the restaurants in Key West are sure to please.

The island offers so many great restaurant choices that it is often difficult to choose between an old favorite and trying something new. Whether you are planning your first visit or you are a regular on the island, this page will help guide you with our own Key West Restaurant reviews and suggestions.

It is difficult to classify the many great Key West Restaurants. I guess that is because of the casual nature of the island itself. Just about every restaurant in Key West welcomes casual attire, but you might be more comfortable in resort wear in others.

Here is the dilemma with classification: Some restaurants could be considered fine dining, but have casual settings on the water. So, should they be classified as “Fine Dining”, Casual Dining” or “Eclectic Fine Dining On The Water With A Casual Flare”? We will give it our best shot in the listings below:

Hang With The Locals:

Geiger Key Marina and Smokehouse and Hog Fish Bar are excellent. Neither is very far from Duval Street and both are local hang outs on the water. Sunday is Barbecue night at Geiger Key Smokehouse – your choice of ribs, shrimp and chicken! When you go to the Hog Fish Bar, order the Hog Fish sandwich. It is excellent and big enough to share!
The Hurricane Hole is also a good choice on the water with indoor and outdoor seating. Right off of the Overseas Highway, this is a great location if you plan to have a few drinks and are staying on Stock Island.

Water Front:

Nothing beats ocean front property and there are plenty of excellent views when it comes to Key West dining.

Louie’s Backyard and the Afterdeck are amazing. The After Deck is my favorite part of the restaurant. Choose a seat at the bar or one of the many tables with a water front view. The Upper Deck and wine bar features fine wine and small plates, also with an excellent view. Rumor has it that Jimmy Buffet used to live next door to this place and can still be found at the Afterdeck Bar on occasion.

Latitudes on Sunset Key - A few hundred yards off of Key West is Sunset Key. It is a Westin resort accessible by a quick boat trip. Okay, it may not technically be on the island, but we’re still calling this one a Key West restaurant! Latitudes boasts great views with wonderful menu selections. Dining is available at outdoor and indoor tables. The views are amazing from any location. There is also both an indoor and outdoor bar.

One of my favorite spots to soak up the sun is at Sunset Pier near Mallory Square. This place is definitely casual with a full menu and bar. I love this spot because of the excellent views of the water. You can sit and watch cruise ships come in or the boat traffic coming into Key West Bight. If you are looking for a place to have a casual lunch and a few drinks in the afternoon this is it! Sit back, relax and watch the boats go by. Oh, be sure to also try the rum punch by the glass or by the pitcher!

Duval Street:

If you arriving on a Key West cruise, there are plenty of great choices within walking distance from port. I promised you could find a cheeseburger in paradise and I wasn’t kidding.

There are two places I recommend to get a burger. Arrive hungry because these burgers are huge.

I really wasn’t kidding about the burger in paradise! The Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant on Duval is the original. Sorry, Jimmy Buffet doesn’t own this one, but it is amazing. This place actually started in Hawaii and also has a location in Las Vegas.

Fogarty’s at the corner of Duval and Caroline Street also has an amazing burger. When I want a burger, I want it loaded and Fogarty’s brings the meat and all the extras…bacon, mushrooms, cheese, onions. Send us an e-mail and let us know what you like on your burger!

There are a few chain restaurants on Duval, but there is a great mix of local restaurants from burgers and beer to fresh sea food and wine. You will also find ice cream shops, pizza by the slice and even a Wendy’s. Duval is a great place to find a uniquely Key West restaurant for lunch or dinner.

Traditional Key West:

Well, this is where we list restaurants in Key West that are unique to the island and likely also have some history. Basically, any restaurant that couldn’t be classified any other way falls here. Excellent dining with unique Key West style is the main theme:

Blue Heaven Restaurant features an eclectic laid back style with the finest menu selections. The staff here is fantastic. We had our kids along on one visit to Blue Heaven and actually arrived an hour before the historic restaurant opened. Scott, one of the Owner-Managers welcomed us to a table and then brought out a snack with home made corn bread, honey and an assortment of jams and butter. Again, this was a full hour before opening! Thanks for the hospitality Scott!

Sarabeth’s is a charming restaurant as well. Not far off of Duval on Simonton and Southard Streets, this is a delicious choice for breakfast and brunch. The menu includes a Key West Pink shrimp and bacon omelet, French toast, pancakes and more! Don’t be surprised when you are greeted by the proprietor. Sarabeth’s is also open for lunch and dinner. I recommend calling ahead for reservations, but if you show up on a whim, it will be worth the wait.
